Recent visit to our partners in the Solomon Islands – July 2015

Our Church Support Officer, Rev Mike Hawke has recently returned from a visit to the Solomon Islands.  He was there to discuss missions projects and relief for emergency projects as well as leading training workshops for clergy.
As part of his visit, various useful gifts were able to be passed on to the clergy and others in ministry there.  Mike’s report included the following:
•    Brother Hubert of the Melanesian Brothers in Honiara received a guitar.
“Brother Hubert has a wonderful singing voice and is learning the guitar, so he and the Brothers will get a lot of use from it. He also is involved in Children's and Youth Ministry in the Diocese.”
•    Mike visited Sister Doreen and her team, who run the Christian Care Centre on the outskirts of Honiara in The Solomon Islands. They provide care and support to Women and children who have been subject to violence and abuse.
Sister Doreen had previously mentioned that it would be wonderful if she could afford sending the sisters to town for an Icecream!!! As a result, Mike was able to give a donation from Addington Parish here in NZ to the Sisters for this purpose. A lovely gift to the sisters who provide such a  brilliant ministry.
•    Mike spent 4 days with all the clergy, lay leaders, sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Ysabel, in The Solomon Islands. “Their singing and appetite to learn was most memorable.”  He was able to pass on some (pre-loved)  vestments to the clergy there; especially appreciated as there are four about to be priested next month. Bishop Richard is excited that each one will be able to receive one of these gifts.
