Update on Tonga

25 January 2022

1 Feb 2022 further update: More than NZ$56,000 has already been used to provide immediate relief items to address the most urgent needs. Items are being loaded into the container in Suva, Fiji.

Assessments from Tonga indicate that the most pressing needs right now are for clean water, food and tools to clear ash and eventually re-establish gardens and crops. We are addressing these needs. Our first container of emergency supplies has been loaded up in Suva, Fiji to be sent to Tongatapu then on to Haʻapai one of the most affected outer islands.

More than $46,000 has already been donated to this appeal. Assessments from Tonga indicate that the most pressing needs right now are for clean water and tools to clear ash and eventually re-establish gardens and crops. Our response will include the purchase of a shipping container in Fiji which will then be filled with requested items such as water containers; water purification tablets; cleaning equipment and garden tools. The container will be shipped to Tonga where these items will be used to replenish existing pre-positioned supplies at two Anglican Churches in Nuku’alofa.  The container will then be refitted and used to store relief supplies. This is particularly relevant given we are in the middle of the annual tropical cyclone season.

In the meantime, your prayers and donations are much appreciated. Join with others around the world who are praying Prayers said for people in Tsunami hit Tonga (premierchristian.news)
